Long Overdue

Sunday, June 28th, 2009 by Jevan

So it’s safe to say that we have fallen out of the habit of making blog posts since Banff. Infact, we never even made an in-depth recap of what happened! So here it comes.

We left the 30-plus degree weather in on the coast early with a care package from my girlfriend, and enjoyed a beautiful drive through the British Columbia back country. However, soon after crossing the border into Alberta, the weather took sudden turn for the worse. The temperature plummeted and the skies clouded over, and as we arrived in Banff around six o’clock that evening, it had started snowing.

Tiny Hostel Room

Tiny Hostel Room

We had made arrangements to stay in a hostel for the duration of our trip, but soon after checking in we realized that we had made a huge mistake. The hostel was full of fun, interesting  young people who we were eager to get to know,  but it was clear that they were in Banff for one reason alone – to party. We dropped off our luggage in the tiny room we were sharing with four other people and headed out to dinner.

Over dinner we started to talk about the logistics of staying at the hostel. Where would we work on e-mails and go over notes? Where would we iron our clothes before meetings? Would we be able to get a good night’s sleep? We decided that we should just roll with the punches and do our best – “It’s all part of the experience!” We also made a pact – we were going to steer clear of the partying that was so prevelant at the hostel. Ok, really short post here…

Ya so I just wanted to post this photo I found on Banff’s flickr page.

Also, I found this article from the Banff web-site which is interesting, very interesting. Hmm it talks about how serialized shows are dead. Wish we read that article before we emphasized the serial element of Big Dreams! Oh well – Live and learn I guess.

All Banff’d out

I think I can speak for the both of us when I say we needed a day to recuperate after Banff 2009. We were working very hard the whole week, meeting with producers and broadcasters and pitching them our story Big Dreams. I feel it was very well worth the trip. It might have been the best experience of my life.

I wish I had more photos to post from the festival, but Jevan might have some. We were really too preoccupied with what we were doing to be snapping a million photos.

We will definitely be letting you know if there is any news.

One down, three to go…

So the first day of the Banff Television Festival has come and gone. We started our day at the “Rookies in the Rockies” seminar hosted by Joe Novak of Joe Media Group, and we absorbed some great advice from the panel of industry veterans from both Canada and the United States.

That evening we attended the CBC/Radio Canada Opening Reception where we mingled with the rest of delegates, and came away with some great new contacts.

After the Opening Reception we headed to the “Martini Madness” party being thrown by Women in Film & Television Alberta at the Saltlik Steakhouse in downtown Banff, where a couple hundred of the delegates partied well into the night. We had a great time there, and managed to leave with a renewed sense of confidence.

Today is the day we begin our first round of meetings with producers and executives. It should be exciting, and we’re confident we are ready. We will let you know how it goes.

Well, the first day of the festival is already here. We are scrambling to get everything ready before we check in this afternoon, but all in all we feel prepared.

We will be updating the blog regularily with any news, some pictures, that kind of thing, so check back daily to get all the latest!
