Celebration of Light 2009 – Take One
by JevanWell, yesterday was the 2nd night of Vancouver’s annual Celebration of Light fireworks festival. When the sun started to set around 9 o’clock, something really incredible happened.
As some low cloud rolled in and the humidity rose, an electrical storm began. It brought with it some incredibly hard rain and painted the sky shades of yellow and orange.
When the sun set, and the fireworks began, the storm seemed to pick up strength. The lightning strikes began to happen more frequently.
After the show was over, and the crowds dissipated, and I thought all the excitement had come and gone, I called it a night and went to bed. Then, around 3 AM, my girlfriend woke me up saying she heard a loud bang outside the building. I grabbed the camera and went to investigate. I first looked out the window and saw a crowd and some emergency vehicles were already on scene.
I ran outside and as I got closer to the corner I realized what I was looking at. An SUV had hopped the curb and crashed into the building next to us!
My neighbors who witnessed it said a woman jumped out of the vehicle and ran down my street, and police set out to look for her. Luckily it seems like no one was injured, and the damage to the apartment that got hit was minimal.
