I’m about a week behind on this one, but I am so excited I have to write this anyway! Variety reports that Alexander Payne, co-writer (with Jim Taylor) and director of the films Citizen Ruth, Election, About Schmidt, and Sideways, is working on a new project called The Descendants.

Like his most recent films, The Descendants is adapted from a novel, this one by Hawaiian author Kaui Hart Hemmings. Payne is doing a polish draft on a script by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, and will produce alongside Taylor and Jim Burke.

Payne also has another project in the pipeline called Downsizing, starring Paul Giamatti, Sacha Baron Cohen and Reese Witherspoon with Giamatti playing a man who figures he would have a better life if he shrank himself.
